Alopecia

Alopecia - Before and after image - Memphis Center for Aesthetic Medicine

Hair is a feature important for both men and women. We do not tend to consider how much we rely on the hair on our body to make us feel masculine or feminine and generally attractive and youthful. The occurrence of hair loss can have an enormous impact on both men and women. At the Memphis Center for Aesthetic Medicine, we have the training and experience with which we can help many of our concerned patients determine the cause of hair loss and promote regrowth when possible.

The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. In this general category of hair disorders are several subcategories. Some people may be affected by widespread hair loss in diffuse alopecia. Others may have focal alopecia, in which hair loss or bald spots develop in small, distinct areas.

Types of alopecia

  • Androgenetic alopecia
    • Male pattern baldness is usually rooted in genetics. You will often see men within the same family displaying a particular pattern of hair loss. Male pattern baldness may occur at any age, typically beginning at the front of the head, at the crown, or in the area around the ears. Patterns may follow the hairline and may involve only a bit of hair, or may eventually lead to total hair loss on the head.
    • Female pattern baldness is different than male pattern baldness in that total hair loss typically does not occur. The woman who experiences pattern baldness tends to see hair thinning all over the head with the exception of the hairline at the front of the head.
  • Alopecia areata is a condition in which hair is suddenly lost in a localized area. Sometimes, however, this type of alopecia will include diffuse thinning or hair loss all over the head. In rare cases, hair loss occurs throughout the entire body. Most often, the bald spots that develop in alopecia areata are only temporary. Within a few months, new hair growth in the affected area can be seen. The cause of alopecia areata is not known. Research is ongoing in this area.
Dr. Salaam offers patients of Memphis Center for Aesthetic Medicine with outstanding care for hair loss. Our patients can discuss their concerns related to hair loss, and receive a comprehensive evaluation in which we seek to determine the cause of the disturbance to hair growth and devise individual therapy when growth is reversible. During our consultation visit, we will discuss medical history and perform a physical examination. In some cases, it may be necessary to take a small sampling of cells from the scalp for further testing.
